HOW TO SUCCESSFULLY USE MUSICXRAY.COM!

Attention Record Label's, Artist's and Music Lovers Alike!

About a year ago I began using a music industry service for professionals called Music X-Ray.  Mike McCready and the team at MusicXray.com have developed a unique platform that was carefully designed as a tool to help one succeed in the music business!

There are many tools available at MusicXray.com, including, but not limited to: Discovering exciting new artists from a worldwide pool of talent; discovering well crafted songs available for licensing from songwriters all over the world; targeting songs in your catalog for a variety of licensing opportunities and placement in everything from, Feature Films, Compilation Albums, TV Shows, Commercial Jingles, publishing offers and much more!

There are 3 primary ways you must use MusicXray.com in order to take full advantage of everything it has to offer.

1: As an artist or a manager:  I use the service to submit our label's talent roster to some of the biggest opportunities available from major studios, publishing company's, music supervisor's in the television and film business.  One might think that submitting tracks for huge opportunity's in the music industry is like playing the lotto...and they might be right!  But not anymore!  MusicXray.com has developed a highly sophisticated way of analyzing a song to see what kind of professional music industry, TV and Film opportunities w2ill be most likely to make a fit for the track and/or artist being submitted!

For example, after submitting 4 tracks for what Music Xray calls "Diagnostics" I was able to learn things about my artist and his songs that immediately led to success!  What did I learn?  First off, after uploading some of my artists tracks, Music Xray's diagnostics immediately provided me with numerous "Matching" opportunity's which decreases the time and effort of scouring through thousands of submissions in order to point managers, artists and labels in the right direction when submitting a track!  Whats even more exciting is that Music Xray has created an algorithm (unlike anything I have seen from any other service thats even remotely similar) that once applied, provides you with an overall rating on your song that will literally tell you what your odds are of scoring a licensing deal for your track by using best practices when submitting songs on the platform to opportunities offered from Major and Independent label's, music supervisors, Film and TV projects, Movie studios, Broadcast Networks, Publishing companies and so on!

John Spicer's results for  MusicXray.com's diagnostics, analytics and submissions:

Our flagship country artist, John Spicer has received a great deal of critical acclaim from the music industry, including everyone from the legendary Merle Haggard saying that "He Just might be what we've all been looking for!", to record industry icon, Jerry Greenberg, (President of Atlantic Records, Sony Records & MJJ Records) calling John,  "The Most Promising Artist I've Seen in Decades."

When you've got guys like Merle Haggard and Jerry Greenberg being quoted about an artist, you've got to hope that some, new fangled piece of software is going to recognize talent as good as a Legendary artist and record executive!  Well...it Did!  I was both stunned, and pleased to see that merle and Jerry's words about John Spicer proved spot on with all 4 songs recently uploaded for diagnostics and listened to by industry professionals came back with a 99% MusicXray Rating!  This rating basically states that I've got a 99% chance of placing one of John's songs for one of the matched submission/licensing opportunities on the MusicXray.com website!

I've gotta admit...it gives me chills to see technology and good old fashioned (know how) remain consistent!

(John's chances of licensing one of his tracks for a major opportunity on MusicXray.com for the last 4 songs we have run diagnostics on was a staggering 99%!!)

So after using MusicXray's diagnostics to help me decide which opportunity's to submit one of John's song to first, I decided to make a couple of submissions.  The results came back with one song being placed on hold and two other songs being offered the opportunity we submitted to!   Pretty exciting stuff!

To the left you can see the results to 4 straight songs in a row being diagnosed with a 99% chance of success.

If you wanna judge for yourself, please feel free to check out some of these songs and let me know if you think Merle Haggard, Jerry Greenberg and MusicXray.com got it right when it comes to our new, up and coming country artist, John Spicer!  To sample some of these tracks please  visit www.JohnSpicermusic.com, or to purchase John Spicer, Crossing Over Part One on iTunes, CLICK HERE

2: Using MusicXray.com as a music industry professional, i.e. Label, music Supervisor, Publisher, etc...

In addition to submitting my roster of artists to other music industry opportunities via film, television, soundtrack, etc. I have also had great success using MusicXray to CREATE opportunities for artists!  Since we run our own worldwide distribution platform for both MUSIC, Film Television and other forms of media, it has been very exciting to create submission opportunities on MusicXray and get to hear all of the amazing submission tracks that get sent to us!

Again...ans an industry professional MusicXray is a pleasure on both sides of the coin!  When submitting tracks for my artists, I get to take advantage of its sophisticated Diagnostics and analytics, however when I am creating a submission for one of our Films that needs a music track, or a compilation album, or signing opportunity, it is just as advantagous from the other end!  By the time submissions get sent to me, they are very close to what I am looking for based on MusicXray's ability to diagnose the submission opportunities and match them with the proper artist, label etc!

This platform is truly a victory for the music industry professional.  Having said that, you might be wondering what is the 3rd way that I like to use Music Xray!

3:  Using Music Xray as a fan!

Lastly, Music Xray offers music fans the ability to be early adapters by giving them the newest, hottest unsigned artists, bands and songs in the world at their fingertips!  The way MusicXray weaves "fans" into the process is genius.

All In all, MusicXray.com is a great resource, that, as a label executive, manager, artist and fan, I couldn't live without!

In addition to submitting John Spicer for the right opportunities found on MusicXray.com I am also buys doing the same with our flagship Metal band, FUNGONEWRONG.  On the flipped, I am extremely busy having my A&R team listen to every single submission for every single opportunity we have posted on Music Xray.

One of our most exciting posts is the new worldwide Distribution/Label Deal we are currently offering to artists, bands and independent record labels!  If you run a label, manage an artist or if you ARE an artist who has always dreamed of having your OWN record label...then CLICK HERE TO CHECK OUT WHAT WE ARE DOING ON MUSICXRAY.COM!

Making Money Using The MusicXray Affiliate Code: As someone who uses the service for both submitting my roster of artist to other music industry opportunities as well as seeking out new tracks, bands and artists for my own industry opportunities, I think it is wise to make sure and imbed the Music Xray affiliate link onto your websites.  For artists it allows the music professionals who use Music Xray a chance to listen to their material through a single platform with other artists they are thinking about licensing and/or signing....and as a Label Executive, Manager or Music Industry professional, imbedding the code allows artists to easily find your submission opportunities.  AND...if YOU are an artist who is using MY platform to distribute all of your music worldwide (instead of paying to use Tunecore, CD Baby or another similar service) then you can use MusicXray to earn money on your submissions, (as a label) which can then be INVESTED into submitting YOUR artists to other licensing opportunities.  Its a brilliant business model and is fair for everyone. The submissions costs aren't that much for the artist and by having one, it helps the cream rise to the top and forces artists to really think about his or her submission to a professional Music Industry offer and therefore only submit their most appropriate material for each submission!

Please don't click away without subscribing to my blog.  I really hope to hear from you as well, so please share your thoughts, and fire away with any questions you might have.

Sincerely,
Houston Curtis

KARINA SMIRNOFF GETS SHOT BY RALPH MACCHIO - (The Short Story)

The title of this blog might be a bit misleading, however, other than the expected backlash from one of my fellow executive producers (Lindsay Reilly who does a magnificent job as Karina Smirnoff's manager),  I'm sure you won't be disappointed should you keep reading.  Perhaps I should have called it, How I
Decided To Support Ralph Macchio's Desire To SHOOT a Short Film!  I suppose the marketer inside of me just couldn't help it!  (Sorry Lindsay...any press is good press right?)

Over the past two decades, the "short film" has become an increasingly popular format for artists to express themselves on the silver screen.  Why? For one, with the emergence of new media platforms like YouTube and Vimeo, film makers have turned out in droves creating short form content across numerous genre's.  And since it is ultimately the viewers who dictate Hollywood's next move, we are seeing more and more established studios, producers directors and actors stepping into the short film arena now more than ever before.

(Short films used to be non-existent in the brick & mortar video stores.  But now, mega online digital retailers like iTunes and Amazon are literally offering thousands of short films for instant download.)

But what if you have a short film being written and directed by an 80's blockbuster movie star like Ralph Macchio which features Karina Smirnoff from the hit show Dancing With The Stars as well as 4 time Oscar Nominee Marsha Mason and up and coming dramatic film and TV star Ben Hyland?  Will the budget on such a film be too high to recoup?  Will the film make money for the studio that releases it?  What questions do you need to ask yourself when taking on a BIG Short? What factors are important to think about?  Let me share a few of the key things I thought about when deciding to executive produce Across Grace Alley.

Click Here to see the trailer!

1: RELATIONSHIPS
Success in this industry often lives and dies on the relationships you gain and the ones you lose.  (Ralph Macchio stopped by the studio to meet with me and my social media marketing crew during the making of the AGA movie poster)

Aside from being a super nice guy, I could immediately tell that Ralph was extremely passionate about the script he wrote for Karina and his passion certainly resonated with me as did the fabulous script he had written.  On top of that, Ralph had found a phenomenal young actor (Ben Hyland) to play opposite Karina and was in search of an A list actress for a grandmother role (who ultimately became Marsha Mason) which would complete his casting.  And by helping Ralph achieve something he is so passionate about in the short film arena, I figured there might be a good shot the two of us would be doing another (bigger) project together down the road. After working together for the past year, I have to admit, nothing would please me more.

2: CROSS PROMOTION

I was also able to look beyond the straight financial implications of producing a short film and see that ACROSS GRACE ALLEY would bring with it, many ancillary benefits, so long as I was able to wrap my head around the big picture.  For one, it would give my company an even bigger marketing platform from which to build a Dance/Workout video franchise around Karina Smirnoff.  I already had the rights to her first self released workout video and was just waiting for the right time to release it.  Given the unique way that Ralph and Karina met, and made it to the finals on Dancing With The Stars created a backdrop from which my PR campaign for both the short film, (ACROSS GRACE ALLEY) and the workout DVD would certainly create a stronger chance at being taken seriously in the marketplace.

3: PRESTIGE
Ralph Macchio on set with Karina Smirnoff for Across Grace Alley
I was very impressed with Ralph and Karina's commitment to the project and could see that Ralph was going to treat ACROSS GRACE ALLEY as if it were a mini-feature film.  I was also just launching my new film label HCP (Houston Curtis Pictures) under our new studio shingle, Legend Group Studios and figured...a little prestige certainly couldn't hurt.  Even still, I had certain prerequisites that needed to be met in order for me to fully commit to bringing this film to completion and putting my marketing team to work in order to promote it.  One of those prerequisites was that the Grandmother character had to have my approval. The other was that Ralph needed to play the role of the Father in the film.

My first request was granted in spades with the incredible performance from 4 time best actress nominee Marsha Mason.  Ralph, reluctantly granted my second request however it had to be the least amount of screen time he had ever delivered in his career. From an artistic standpoint, Ralph didn't want  his appearance in the film to distract anyone from the beauty of the story he was telling.  A decision I now applaud him for.  The film turned out to be fantastic and has been met with wonderful reviews and tons of press during its run in four film festivals to date.

CLICK HERE TO SEE WHY ACROSS GRACE ALLEY IS THE MOST TALKED ABOUT SHORT FILM OF THE YEAR.

4: CELEBRITY VALUE

And thanks to the promotional savvy and star power of Ralph and Karina, ACROSS GRACE ALLEY has become the most highly promoted/talked about short film in recent years with nods from Oprah Winfrey, The View, Queen Latifa, and several other media outlets.  Not to mention, we have gathered some incredible footage along the film festival journey to add to the bonus features that will be available when the film is released.  I will also have the benefit of a large twitter following from Ralph and Karina and will be able to trailer the film on Karina's upcoming workout video which is being released nationally alongside the film.  In addition, the social media reach from both Karina and Ralph combined is a very powerful tool.  However, that power only means something if they are willing to yield it for the sake of the project!  Given the critical acclaim and acceptance into so many prestigious film festivals, Ralph and Karina couldn't have been more helpful and continue to show more excitement every day as this film prepares to launch nationally!

So...all though I wasn't a first time film maker setting out to kickstart my career, nor was I an actor trying to use a short to spotlight my talent, or a director hoping studios would hire me to direct a big budget dramatic feature...I am still very confident that executive producing ACROSS GRACE ALLEY was a career decision I would make again if I were to go back in time.  How many projects can you say that about?

I hope this advice helps other short film makers out there, or perhaps even helps other Studios to start participating in adding shorts to their stable of films. Maybe you will be downloading a copy of Across Grace Alley on iTunes in the near future and thus helping me get one step closer to proving what I've said in this blog to be true!  I sure hope you do....not because I need the money, but because I'm very proud of this film, and am confident you will thank me for helping Ralph, Karina and Lindsay bring it to life after you've had a chance to see it!  I look forward to your comments and questions.  Check out the trailer for the film at www.acrossgracealley.com and keep an eye out for a release date to be announced very soon!

Thanks for reading my blog.  I will try to answer any and all comments, questions, praises, commands, demands theories and philosophy's as quickly as they come in.  And when Lindsay Reilly (Karina Smirnoff's manager) calls to scold me for the title of my blog, I will remind her that its all her fault for convincing a mad man to partner with her in the first place!

Sincerely,
Houston Curtis

Cheech and Chong's Animated Movie to Hit Select Theaters near you on April 18th!

The concept for Cheech And Chong's Animated Movie began as a direct to video concept in 2007.  I was originally approached by a team of first time animation directors who were working on a children's title that I had agreed to distribute.  The brand was Cheech and Chong.  At the time, it was but only a rumor, that the infamous comedic due would be reuniting for their first tour in 25 years.  The project went into development and I locked up the rights to begin production.

In my first piece of marketing for the film I wrote a headline that read: "Their First Joint Venture in over 25 Years!"  Apparently Harvey Weinstein's company thought it was clever because they ended up using that same headline for the theatrical release of the Cheech and Chong Light Up America tour.

Given that Cheech and Chong were on fire again, we decided that a simple video was too small.  If we were going to take advantage of the magnitude of the Cheech and Chong brand, the fans deserved a full on animated Movie!

We figured out a way to thread each of the classic bits from the Grammy winning Cheech and Chong albums into a full length feature by using the aid of a Body Crab named Buster!  Buster serves the film much like the squirrel in ice age who is always trying to get the nut!  The difference being, Buster is trying to suck the blood off of Tommy or Cheech in order to get his buzz on.  This device, allowed us to transition from bit to bit and provided enough of a through line for us to thread everything together into an entire movie.

One of the things I like about this picture is that it appeals to a very wide demographic.  On one hand, we have Tommy Chong and Cheech Marin, two iconic comedians from the early 70's.  And on the other, we have a crude, fun flash animation that allows us to completely re-imagine the humor from their recordings for a new generation of movie goers.  When my young nephew first saw a test screening he laughed and said..."These guys remind me of Harold and Kumar!"

Well, now its up to FOX who bought the film to make sure that the young audience of weed-centric films like Harold and Kumar, Pineapple Express, or have a dozen other films by the Todd Phillips and Judd Apatow's of the world have a chance to see it!  You can CLICK HERE for a list of theaters near you, grab your best "bud" and roll on out for a few laughs!

I'd like to thank the Curtis family for helping me make this film.  Without them, it simply couldn't have happened.  I'd also like to thank Co-Executive Producer's Joe Reitman and Andy Bloch as well as Associate Producers Jerry Katell and Johnny Frato!  Plus the entire Big Vision Entertainment staff, as well as my new staff and partners at Legend Group Studios, and of course my immediate family who were incredibly supportive during the madness of making this movie. (My daughters still don't know why the funny looking guys eyes are so red...and I wanna keep it that way!)

This marks the first theatrical feature under the Houston Curtis Pictures label.  Be sure to check back for my next blog which will talk more about the business of making and selling movies in Hollywood as well as direct marketing, Home Entertainment, and the brave new digital media frontier.

If you have any questions about Cheech and Chong's Animated Movie, please don't hesitate to reply to this blog.  I will try and answer each question in a timely fashion.  And please SUBSCRIBE to my blog and my Youtube Channel Houston Curtis Pictures for more updates and insight into the entertainment business, upcoming projects, and movie marketing madness.

Thanks for reading.  I really appreciate you stopping by.

Houston Curtis

About Tom Fletcher
Recording engineer-producer Tom Fletcher has garnered ten platinum records and seventeen gold records to date. His technical acumen has been profiled and featured in recording periodicals; he's graced the covers of both MIX and EQ magazines.
At the young age of eleven, Fletcher began working at Paul Anka's Las Vegas Record Studio in Nevada. Working under the tutelage of Chips Davis and Scott Spain, Fletcher advanced to chief engineer by the time he turned seventeen. Serving as chief engineer, Fletcher recorded projects for Anka, Doc Severinsen, Charo and the AGVA Entertainment Awards.
It wasn't long before Fletcher moved to Los Angeles, where he landed a job as recording engineer for Toto. Their successful collaboration extended for years and caught the attention of many. In addition to his work with Toto, Fletcher acted as recording engineer on the Jackson Five Victory record. Naturally, Fletcher developed good working relationships with several highly respected music and record industry veterans like: David Foster, Keith Olsen, Tom Knox and Al Schmitt.
Years of studio activity followed with Don Henley, Suicidal Tendencies, Ozzy Osbourne, Steve Lukather, Yes, Air Supply, Jeff Beck, Scorpions and Carl Anderson. Still heavily booked, Fletcher dedicated 2003 to producing and engineering the live shows of popular newcomer Hilary Duff (including the WB 16th Birthday Special).
Tom Fletcher is wise. He took advantage of every available opportunity while in the recording studio to develop a repertoire of distinct recording styles and techniques. Throughout the years, Fletcher has developed and refined those techniques into a style of sound that is today both unmatched and un-replicated. Anxiously, Fletcher looks forward to bringing these skills to Legend Group Records and Stun Gun Studios.

From the inner most cornfields of Southern Illinois, spawns "the worlds most notorious band" FUNGONEWRONG. Their mix of Metal meets Punk meets Death Thrash meets Groove and Melody gives FUNGONEWRONG a fresh and relevant approach! With years of experience and no musical or influential limitations, FUNGONEWRONG will rise to the top of the musical mountain and stick their metal flag deep in the minds of all music lovers.
