Cheech and Chong's Animated Movie to Hit Select Theaters near you on April 18th!

The concept for Cheech And Chong's Animated Movie began as a direct to video concept in 2007.  I was originally approached by a team of first time animation directors who were working on a children's title that I had agreed to distribute.  The brand was Cheech and Chong.  At the time, it was but only a rumor, that the infamous comedic due would be reuniting for their first tour in 25 years.  The project went into development and I locked up the rights to begin production.

In my first piece of marketing for the film I wrote a headline that read: "Their First Joint Venture in over 25 Years!"  Apparently Harvey Weinstein's company thought it was clever because they ended up using that same headline for the theatrical release of the Cheech and Chong Light Up America tour.

Given that Cheech and Chong were on fire again, we decided that a simple video was too small.  If we were going to take advantage of the magnitude of the Cheech and Chong brand, the fans deserved a full on animated Movie!

We figured out a way to thread each of the classic bits from the Grammy winning Cheech and Chong albums into a full length feature by using the aid of a Body Crab named Buster!  Buster serves the film much like the squirrel in ice age who is always trying to get the nut!  The difference being, Buster is trying to suck the blood off of Tommy or Cheech in order to get his buzz on.  This device, allowed us to transition from bit to bit and provided enough of a through line for us to thread everything together into an entire movie.

One of the things I like about this picture is that it appeals to a very wide demographic.  On one hand, we have Tommy Chong and Cheech Marin, two iconic comedians from the early 70's.  And on the other, we have a crude, fun flash animation that allows us to completely re-imagine the humor from their recordings for a new generation of movie goers.  When my young nephew first saw a test screening he laughed and said..."These guys remind me of Harold and Kumar!"

Well, now its up to FOX who bought the film to make sure that the young audience of weed-centric films like Harold and Kumar, Pineapple Express, or have a dozen other films by the Todd Phillips and Judd Apatow's of the world have a chance to see it!  You can CLICK HERE for a list of theaters near you, grab your best "bud" and roll on out for a few laughs!

I'd like to thank the Curtis family for helping me make this film.  Without them, it simply couldn't have happened.  I'd also like to thank Co-Executive Producer's Joe Reitman and Andy Bloch as well as Associate Producers Jerry Katell and Johnny Frato!  Plus the entire Big Vision Entertainment staff, as well as my new staff and partners at Legend Group Studios, and of course my immediate family who were incredibly supportive during the madness of making this movie. (My daughters still don't know why the funny looking guys eyes are so red...and I wanna keep it that way!)

This marks the first theatrical feature under the Houston Curtis Pictures label.  Be sure to check back for my next blog which will talk more about the business of making and selling movies in Hollywood as well as direct marketing, Home Entertainment, and the brave new digital media frontier.
